Stuart-Back to School Safety: Avoid Pain from Heavy Backpacks
August 12 , 2011 Rosemont, IL A student’s backpack might contain homework, books, laptops, iPods, lunches and even gym clothes. As their backpacks become stuffed to the brim, the pack can become much too heavy or might be worn improperly, causing unnecessary back strain and pain to a child’s back. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) suggests that backpacks be worn correctly and should not carry too much weight, that can cause pain or discomfort. STATISTICS According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in 2010, nearly 28,000 people were treated in hospitals, doctors’ offices, and emergency rooms for backpack-related injuries like strains, sprains, dislocations and fractures. AAOS SAFETY TIPS The AAOS recommends the following safety tips to help eliminate pain and discomfort due to backpacks: Always use both shoulder straps to keep the weight of the backpack better distributed; Tighten the straps and use waist strap if the bag has one; Remove or organize items if too heavy and place biggest items closest to the back; Lift properly and bend at the knees to pick up a backpack; Carry only those items that are required for the day. Parents also can help with backpack-related pain: Encourage your child or teenager to tell you about pain or discomfort that may be caused by a heavy backpack, like numbness or tingling in the arms or legs. Purchase a backpack appropriate for the size of your child and look for any changes in your child’s posture when they wear the backpack. Watch your child put on or take off the backpack to see if it is a struggle for them. Do not ignore red marks on the shoulders if your child or teenager expresses discomfort. Talk to the school about lightening the load. Keep the load at 10-15 percent or less of the child’s bodyweight. Be sure the school allows students to stop at their lockers throughout the day. EXPERT ADVICE “Pain from backpacks is a common occurrence for students when they over pack their bags or don’t distribute the weight evenly in the pack,” said orthopaedic surgeon Laurel C. Blakemore, MD, AAOS spokesperson and chief of orthopedic surgery at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C. “There are a number of options to help alleviate backpack-related pain, like making sure the backpack doesn’t weigh more than 10-15 percent of the child’s body weight and wearing a backpack that fits well over both shoulders and at the waist.” If you or the student in your home suffers from lower back pain call a Stuart Chiropractor Dr. Loving at Loving Chiropractic and Wellness. Statin Candy for anyone?
by Dr. Erich As a doctor, I’m outraged. As a parent… well… I’m even more outraged… For years, MD’s have been handing out statin drugs to any patient with high cholesterol. But they’re the most dangerous drugs a doctor can prescribe. They’ve been linked to fatigue, heart problems, and even death. But here’s what’s different about the side effects of statins: They don’t just pose an outside risk of an unlikely problem. They rob every single person who takes even one pill of energy. And if you take one for long enough, you’re going to feel very tired and very old. Now the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) is pushing this poison to a new group. I’m talking about children. Some as young as 8 years old! AAP guidelines have just recommended cholesterol screenings for high-risk children ages two and up. And statin therapy for kids as young as eight with LDLs over 190mg/dl.1 Now, some are calling for even more aggressive screening measures to find kids “in need” of these drugs. All to ensure that pharmaceutical companies will keep making billions for years to come. Consider this: AAP’s Pediatrics published a new study a couple months ago. Researchers screened all fifth graders in West Virginia public schools, including 5,798 who wouldn’t have met cholesterol screening guidelines. They found 268 children with cholesterol high enough to be treated with drugs.2 It frightens me to even think about the implications…Entire generations getting hooked on drugs with dangerous side effects. Ones that include: Muscle pain, Liver damage, Nausea, Lowered mental performance, Chronic fatigue, Cardiomyopathy (deterioration of your heart’s function), Depletion of CoQ10 in the heart (which can cause congestive heart failure). What’s more, this could open up the floodgates for pharmaceutical companies to promote their use in kids. Come to think of it, that’s already happening. I just read that Pfizer introduced a sweet and tasty “gummy-like” version of Lipitor. I’m sure it’ll boost sales before their patent runs out next year. The lesson here is, “Just say NO to statins!” You can’t trust them – or the folks telling you to take them. If a child came to my office with high cholesterol, I would start a chiropractic care plan to make sure we have full nerve supply and tell him/her to exercise in short bursts of high intensity for at least 12 minutes a day, cut carbs, and eat foods that are rich in omega-3s, like salmon, flax seeds, and walnuts. For most children, this would solve the problem within six weeks. Why? Because children’s bodies heal themselves quickly. And yours will, too – IF you do the right thing. Thanks for sharing Dr. Erich. Use chiropractic as preventative maintenance. Using the latest technology, Dr. Loving’s unique health approach combines the proven Impulse, ArthroStim, and VibraCussor instruments that help his patients get well with literally no twisting or popping of their spine. Beware of the SWEET POISONS
I am often asked by patients “What sweeteners are the safest for me to use?” With the dizzying array of sweeteners available on the market today, that’s a great question. Here’s my take on the subject. Let’s start with one the older sweeteners, Sweet N Low (pink packet). This is an artificial sweetener that contains saccharin. To me it is sweet, but has a rather bitter after taste. Saccharin was originally shown to be a carcinogen (cancer causing agent). Later research showed that it wasn’t , and then more research shows that, in fact, it is. Most diet sodas from soda machines in restaurants are sweetened with saccharin. Personally, I wouldn’t touch it with a ten foot pole. Next is Equal (blue packet), which contains Nutrasweet. Nutrasweet is a brand name containing a chemical that is in the aspartame family. Aspartame has been shown through exhaustive research to be a neuro-excitotoxin. In plain English, large enough quantities of aspartame chemicals will literally cause nerve cells to be over-excited to the point of death. Long term aspartame consumption has been linked to numerous neurological degenerative disorders such as Parkinson’s and Alzhemier’s disease. Verdict: throw it out! Following next is Splenda (yellow packet), a brand which contains a sweetener called sucralose. Sucralose is a naturally occurring sugar, so you would think that side-effects would be less dangerous. Due to being relatively new on the scene, however, there has not been an incredible amount of research done on long-term effects of sucralose consumption. The verdict is still out on this one. Next on the list is good old sugar (white packet). While there is exhaustive research on all the health problems associated with excess sugar consumption (diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular problems, etc.), I am convinced that you are much better off consuming the 10-20 calories per packet (that can be easily burned off with a few minutes of brisk walking) than putting some of these others poisons in your body. While we should all work to keep our refined sugar intake as low as possible, I think this is the best choice for you and your families’ long-term health. Thanks for sharing Dr. Erich Do not wait until you are in pain to come see us. Use chiropractic as preventative maintenance. Using the latest technology, Dr. Loving’s unique health approach combines the proven Impulse, ArthroStim, and VibraCussor instruments that help his patients get well with literally no twisting or popping of their spine. Chiropractic is Health Care, Not Disease Care
by: Herb Newborg (NaturalNews) Chiropractors have, for the past 112 years, treated sickness and infirmity without the use of drugs and with the goal of avoiding surgical removal or repair of any of the body’s organs or structures. Chiropractic’s message is that the proactive care of one’s body and wise lifestyle choices are necessary to achieve health. Chiropractors have held and maintained this view, even before it became fashionable and long before evidence made it clear that the drug and surgery model of “health care” is really nothing more than “disease care”, waiting for disease to occur and then treating the effects. Chiropractic takes a preventive approach to health care: eliminate the cause of disease. Chiropractors have always maintained that interfering with the transmission of the electro-chemical signals that connect your brain, the master control system for the human organism, to every organ and cell in your body has a detrimental effect on health. This system is so delicate and of such vital importance that the body has designed the most elaborate set of protection, armor if you will, to protect it. The skull is a protective vault that houses and protects the most sensitive of systems: the eyes, the mouth, the ears and most importantly, the brain. The next critical organ in your body, the spinal cord, is guarded by your spine. This masterpiece of engineering is 24 vertebrae, each one a unique bone, that serves not only as the axis of your musculoskeletal system, giving you the unique ability to walk upright, but also has a unique set of nerves that run through it to every other system of the body through individual holes called foramen. What travels through the spine and the foramen that protect them is the very essence of your being. From your brain, your spinal cord and the millions of nerves that branch out from it are the core from which your body functions. Before you came into the world, you formed a brain and a spinal cord and developed a body around it. And so it is today that the brain regulates the rest of your body through this delicate system of nerves protected by your spine. Chiropractors maintain the proper position of these delicate joints and the precious cargo which they protect, your nerve system. Pressure on the root nerves that leave the spine through the foramen to control and regulate all of the other organ systems of the body can affect millions of nerve fibers. Pressure on the brain stem, where it leaves the skull and enters the spine can also affect millions of nerve fibers. Interfering with these nerve fibers can have disastrous affects on your health. Chiropractors detect and correct the cause of this interference, allowing your body to self regulate, adapt and heal. The care and maintenance of the spine and nervous system is a necessary component of any natural approach to health and wellness. Chiropractors have been outspoken opponents of water fluoridation, mass vaccination, over-use of prescription drugs, food additives and have always maintained that it is better to find and correct the cause of disease, rather than merely treat or cover up symptoms. Today, chiropractors embrace and support the growing body of evidence that health is a result of – a fully functioning nerve system, consuming natural, nutrient rich food, clean pure water, proper exercise, natural sleep and emotional/spiritual well being. A healthy spine allows your body to adapt, regulate and fully realize the benefits of all of these other natural methods of avoiding disease and achieving health. See your chiropractor today to have your spine checked and begin to extricate yourself from the disease care system of treating symptoms. Thanks for sharing Herb and Natural News. Stuart Have you heard of “Kiroshi”?
I’ve been doing some reading lately on a term you may not have heard of called “kiroshi”. The term is Japanese in origin, and most closely translates to “death from overwork”. This phenomenon was first discovered several decades ago by Japanese doctors who were attempting to determine the cause of death of some perplexing mortalities, people who simply died from no other obvious causes. What they came to realize was that people who work, work, work without ever taking time to rest and recharge will LITERALLY work themselves to death! It is estimated that over 10,000 deaths are reported in Japan every year from kiroshi. And do you wanna’ know the CRAZY part? There is only one country on the planet where the average worker works more hours than Japan. You guessed it: the United States! Here’s an interesting fact for you. In the U.S., there are more reported heart attacks between 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. Monday morning than any other comparable time period of the week. What does that mean? Some people would rather DIE than go to work! Why am I telling you this? I take it very seriously when I say that YOU NEED TO TAKE TIME TO REST AND RECOVER!!! Our culture generally looks at recovery time as a weakness, but you life could LITERALLY depend on it! Adding a regimen of regular chiropractic care to your health regimen will aid in maintaining balance in your body and nervous system and adding years to life…and life to your years. Palm City Florida Chiropractic Treatments for Back Pain
By: Steven G. Yeomans, DC Chiropractic is a health care profession dedicated to the non-surgical treatment of disorders of the nervous system and/or musculoskeletal system, generally through chiropractors maintaining a unique focus on spinal manipulation and treatment of surrounding structures. Chiropractic treatments typically focus on, but are not limited to, care of: Mid and lower back pain Neck pain Joint pain in the arms and legs Headaches Chiropractic Treatment of Lower Back Pain Doctors of Chiropractic (DC), more commonly known as chiropractors, typically treat conditions involving back pain and/or neck pain through “hands-on” chiropractic care, including: Spinal manipulation and manual manipulation.1 Referring to a high-velocity, short lever arm thrust that is applied to abnormal vertebra with the goal of improving functionality, reducing nerve irritability and restoring range of motion in the back, manual manipulation is also known as chiropractic adjustment. There is firm literature support for chiropractic treatment of lower back pain. Many of the published guidelines recommend chiropractic manipulation to be included in the treatment plan early in the care of lower back pain. Mobilization.1 Chiropractic mobilization refers to low velocity manipulation, movement and stretching of the muscles and joints, with the goal of increasing the range of motion within those areas. In addition to manual manipulation, most chiropractic clinics offer a range of health services, such as: Physical therapy modalities. In many chiropractic practices, various types of equipment (ultrasound, electrical stimulation, traction, etc.) may be used with the goal of reducing back pain and inflammation. Exercises. Various cardiovascular, stretching and strengthening exercises may be prescribed by chiropractors to decrease lower back pain, increase strength and restore range of motion. For example, chiropractors may prescribe exercises that strengthen under-active muscles and/or inhibit over-active muscles with the goal of attaining muscle balance and a balanced structure. Chiropractors may also have patients do exercises that strengthen the weak, underactive muscles of the trunk and pelvis, and exercises that stretch the tight, overactive muscles. Pelvic stabilization. When flat feet and/or subtalar instability are present, the chiropractor may place a small heel lift in the shoe on the short leg side or prescribe corrective arch supports to help stabilize the pelvis. Ergonomics. During the course of chiropractic care, the chiropractor may recommend some procedure(s) that should be employed at home and/or at work. The success or failure of obtaining patient satisfying outcomes may be directly related to an ergonomic/job-related activity or a hobby-related irritating activity. Patient education. A chiropractor may advise a variety of lifestyle modifications, including diet and nutritional programs, self-care and coping strategies, to the patient experiencing lower back pain. It is important to note that doctors of chiropractic do not utilize drugs or surgery in their practice. However, there are times when a chiropractic doctor will recommend that the patient consult another practitioner if these or other methods of treatment are indicated. Stuart Florida Chiropractic for Migraines
It’s another sunny July afternoon and your kids are out by the pool, laughing, playing and enjoying the sunshine. (Make sure they’re wearing sunscreen!) You’d love to join them, but you’re trapped inside again, enduring the pain and frustration of another migraine headache. If you suffer from migraines, you’re certainly not alone. They’re relatively common, affecting an estimated 10% of the population. What can be done to get rid of migraines? According to a recent study, chiropractic care may hold the answer. One hundred and twenty-seven migraine patients (at least one migraine per month) were divided into two groups for comparison. Group 1 received chiropractic adjustments at specific vertebral subluxations determined by the treating practitioner; group 2 served as controls and received inactive treatment (electrical stimulation with no current delivered). Subjects receiving chiropractic adjustments reported substantial improvement in migraine frequency, duration, disability, and medication use following two months of treatment. One in five participants reported a 90% reduction in migraines, and half reported significant improvement in migraine severity. Are you tired of migraine headaches ruining your day? With conventional over-the-counter medications proving less than effective (and often accompanied by dangerous side effects), it’s time to fight the pain from another angle. To find out more about the potential benefits of chiropractic care, schedule an appointment with your doctor of chiropractic. Reference: Tuchin PJ, Pollard H, Bonello R. 9 year old Boxer runs and swims again after 2 years of hip and knee pain in Stuart
Received this story from a client and wanted to share- Dear Dr Loving- Thanks from the bottom of our hearts for taking care of our aging dog! We have a 40 lb, 9 year old boxer. She was the runt of her littler. For the last 2 years she has limped and waddled to walk due to hip and knee pain. The vet’s way to heal is surgery and more pain medicine, and it just wasn’t a possibility for a $3000 surgery on an older dog. Plus the thought of medicine every day for her pain, what would that do to her and her organs? Thankfully we found Dr Loving! At her 1st appointment she was all out of whack- in 10 minutes her body was adjusted to 100%- time to allow her to heal herself! and She did!! You treated her with love, instruments, tools, lasers and very light tough of your hands. No hard pops or manipulation noises. After a few visits she was doing wonderful and then a cat fight in our yard. Back to not being able to even walk on her own, My husband carried her into your office that day and she WALKED out- amazing again. A true testimonial to your practice! It’s been a few months now and she is on maintenance and doing well. Even had her 1st trip to the sand bar in years. She swam and ran all over with our 4 year old and was able to keep up. Before treatment she couldn’t do this or IF she tried it took her days to recover. When I say recover, I mean she wouldn’t leave her bed for days in pain. This time, she came home slept for a few hours, like all of us did- and was back playing that night!! That is why we love Dr Loving’s office, not only did you address her issues and help her heal, but it WORKED and continues to work! No pain meds for this dog! Looking forward to more beach days with our girl! Thanks again Dr Loving and Eddi! The Burke Family and Morgan!

Stuart Florida Chiropractic Care for Back Pain
Among people seeking back pain relief alternatives, most choose chiropractic treatment. About 22 million Americans visit chiropractors annually. Of these, 7.7 million, or 35%, are seeking relief from back pain from various causes, including accidents, sports injuries, and muscle strains. Other complaints include pain in the neck, arms, and legs, and headaches. What Is Chiropractic? Chiropractors use hands-on spinal manipulation and other alternative treatments, the theory being that proper alignment of the body’s musculoskeletal structure, particularly the spine, will enable the body to heal itself without surgery or medication. Manipulation is used to restore mobility to joints restricted by tissue injury caused by a traumatic event, such as falling, or repetitive stress, such as sitting without proper back support. Chiropractic is primarily used as a pain relief alternative for muscles, joints, bones, and connective tissue, such as cartilage, ligaments, and tendons. It is sometimes used in conjunction with conventional medical treatment. The initials “DC” identify a chiropractor, whose education typically includes a pre-med undergraduate degree plus four to five years of chiropractic college. What Does Chiropractic for Back Pain Involve? A chiropractor first takes a medical history, performs a physical examination, and may use lab tests or diagnostic imaging to determine if treatment is appropriate for your back pain. The treatment plan may involve one or more manual adjustments in which the doctor manipulates the joints, using a controlled, sudden force to improve range and quality of motion. Many chiropractors also incorporate nutritional counseling and exercise/rehabilitation into the treatment plan. The goals of chiropractic care include the restoration of function and prevention of injury in addition to back pain relief. What Are the Benefits and Risks of Chiropractic Care? Spinal manipulation and chiropractic care is considered a safe, effective treatment for acute low back pain, the type of sudden injury that results from moving furniture or getting tackled. Acute back pain, which is more common than chronic pain, lasts no more than six weeks and typically gets better on its own. Research has also shown chiropractic to be helpful in treating neck pain and headaches. In addition, osteoarthritis and fibromyalgia may respond to the moderate pressure used both by chiropractors and practitioners of deep tissue massage. Studies have not confirmed the effectiveness of prolotherapy or sclerotherapy for pain relief, used by some chiropractors, osteopaths, and medical doctors, to treat chronic back pain, the type of pain that may come on suddenly or gradually and lasts more than three months. The therapy involves injections to strengthen loosely connected tendons and ligaments. People who have osteoporosis, spinal cord compression, or inflammatory arthritis, or who take blood-thinning medications should not undergo spinal manipulation. In addition, patients with a history of cancer should first obtain clearance from their medical doctor before under going spinal manipulation. All treatment is based on an accurate diagnosis of your back pain. The chiropractor should be well informed regarding your medical history, including ongoing medical conditions, current medications, traumatic/surgical history, and lifestyle factors. Although rare, there have been cases in which treatment worsened a herniated or slipped disc, or neck manipulation resulted in stroke or spinal cord injury. To be safe, always inform your primary health care provider whenever you use chiropractic or other pain relief alternatives. Palm City Florida Chiropractic Migraine Treatment
Overview According to the American Migraine Foundation, 12 percent of Americans suffer from migraines. One in four families has an affected member. Combined medical costs, work time-loss and decreased productivity are estimated to impact the U.S. economy by more than $20 billion annually. There is no known cure for migraines. Current treatments aim to reduce the frequency, intensity and duration of the headaches when they occur. Chiropractic treatment is one option for migraine sufferers. Understanding Migraines The American Migraine Foundation describes migraine as an inherited neurological disorder characterized by hyper-excitable brain networks that may become spontaneously activated or may be activated by specific triggers. Headache pain is the most prominent feature of migraine. This pain is often severe and can lead to missed work and social withdrawal. In some, the pain is preceded by warning symptoms such as visual disturbances or sensitivity to light or noise. The headache may be followed by a period of fatigue, poor concentration or mood changes. The headache pain typically lasts about 24 hours, but the entire episode may play out over two to three days. The Chiropractic Examination An initial chiropractic evaluation will begin with the taking of a history. The mode of onset, frequency, quality, location, duration and severity of the headaches will be discussed, along with associated symptoms like visual disturbances, nausea, light and sound or odor intolerances. The family history may be helpful, as well as a review of other health problems, including current medication use. The chiropractic evaluation will focus primarily on the musculoskeletal system. Posture and muscular asymmetries may be contributing factors. Particular attention will be paid to the muscles and joints of the neck. The neck muscles will be examined for tension or spasm. Reduced global or segmental motion in the neck, if found, will probably be a primary focus of the chiropractor’s treatment. Chiropractic Manipulation Spinal manipulation, the primary treatment modality of most chiropractors, has been studied in the context of migraines. A large study involving 127 participants was reported in the February 2000 issue of the “Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics.” In this study, the subjects who received two months of chiropractic treatment experienced significant improvements in migraine frequency, duration, disability and medication use compared to the control group. Twenty-two percent of the participants reported more than 90 percent reduction of migraines. Triggers Certain foods, alcohol, caffeine, fatigue, sleep changes, eye strain, light conditions, exposure to certain odors or use of certain medications may individually or collectively act as triggers to a migraine episode. Working with a chiropractor can help in identifying likely triggers and developing strategies for their avoidance. Lifestyle The chiropractor generally takes a holistic approach to health problems. Lifestyle considerations are a big part of that approach, and in the case of migraines, lifestyle factors appear to play a prominent role. The American Headache Society makes specific lifestyle recommendations for those suffering with migraines. These include getting adequate sleep, eating and exercising regularly, staying hydrated, limiting consumption of caffeine and alcohol, and reducing stress. A chiropractor can assist his patients in implementing these and other helpful strategies. About this Author Ron Rogers, a Washington chiropractor, has worked with local and national regulatory bodies in his profession and has provided consultation to the national chiropractic licensing board. He is recognized by the National Strength and Conditioning Association as a certified strength and conditioning specialist. Rogers’ works have been published in several peer-reviewed professional journals, covering topics ranging from musculoskeletal diagnosis to research-based rehabilitation strategies.
